The Regional District began preparation of a Liquid Waste Management Plan in June 2006 to determine how the region will deal with its sewage for the next 30 to 50 years. The Joint Advisory Committee and Technical Team representing community interests and government agencies have been active in developing options for the region.
This is a major investment for the region, so we have developed cost-effective and environmentally sound methods of sewage collection and treatment for the long-term. Through this process, we also discussed source control of contaminants, reducing the amount of wastewater we produce, managing stormwater, and how to deal with the biosolids produced.
In accordance with provincial guidelines, the Regional District is seeking public input on this process. We also think that you know your community best, and we want to give you an opportunity to tell us what is best for the community in the long-term. Public input throughout the planning process is essential. Once approved by the Ministry of Environment, there are no mechanisms to appeal the LWMP. The Plan will direct all future municipal wastewater infrastructure upgrading activities. With the adoption of the LWMP, referendums to borrow funds to finance infrastructure necessary for the execution of the Plan may not be required. Periodic review and updating of the LWMP at 5 to 10 year intervals is recommended by the Ministry.
There will be three open house meetings for public input and consultation. The sites have been booked and will be posted on the newspaper article.
